Actually in the past few months owing a Gmail is more like a fad rather than some free service from Google besides search engine you can enjoy. People are crazy about it coz it is hard to get -- they have to beg or swap for one because of the limits of invitations available then. However, things has changed a lot recently. More and more people now own Gmails and they are getting more and more invitations to send out. It's predictable that there has been a boom of Gmail users and invites. I can't say for others why they need Gmail badly. As for me, I do like google and wanna try something new from it. That's it. I really don't care how big the email box would be coz I can never count on web servers to store my important personal information.

Can we regard gmail as a sort of innovation?

Since the Gmail is not open to public yet, it can be regarded as a means of word-of-mouth marketing.
